Mean field and pairing properties in the crust of neutron stars

Properties of the matter in the inner crust of a neutron star are investigated in a Hartree-Fock plus BCS approximation employing schematic effective forces of the type of the Skyrme forces. Special attention is paid to differences between a homogenous and inhomogeneous description of the matter distribution. For that purpose self-consistent Hartree Fock calculations are performed in a spherical Wigner-Seitz cell. The results are compared to predictions of corresponding Thomas Fermi calculations. The influence of the shell structure on the formation of pairing correlations in inhomogeneous matter are discussed.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

Identifying Operational Benefits of the Arrival Management System – A KPI-Based Experimental Method by Evaluating Radar Trajectories

    Get PDF
The arrival management (AMAN) system is a decision support tool for air traffic controllers to establish and maintain the landing sequence for arrival aircraft. The original intention of designing the AMAN system is to improve the efficiency of air traffic management (ATM), but few studies are investigating the operational benefits of this system based on key performance indicators (KPIs) and evaluating actual data in a real-time environment. The main purpose of this paper is to propose a KPI based transferable comparative analysis method for identifying the operational benefits of the AMAN through radar trajectories. Firstly, six KPIs are established from a joint study of the mainstream ATM performance frameworks worldwide. Secondly, appropriate evaluation technique approaches are determined according to the characteristics of each KPI. Finally, a Chinese metropolitan airport is taken for the case study, and three periods are defined to form data samples with high similarity for comparative experiments. The results validate the feasibility of the proposed method and find comprehensive performance improvements in arrival operations under the effects of the AMAN system

    Probing vortices in 4He nanodroplets

    Get PDF
We present static and dynamical properties of linear vortices in 4He droplets obtained from Density Functional calculations. By comparing the adsorption properties of different atomic impurities embedded in pure droplets and in droplets where a quantized vortex has been created, we suggest that Ca atoms should be the dopant of choice to detect vortices by means of spectroscopic experiments.Comment: Typeset using Revtex4, 4 pages and 2 Postscript file

Multiplication and Composition in Weighted Modulation Spaces

We study the existence of the product of two weighted modulation spaces. For this purpose we discuss two different strategies. The more simple one allows transparent proofs in various situations. However, our second method allows a closer look onto associated norm inequalities under restrictions in the Fourier image. This will give us the opportunity to treat the boundedness of composition operators.Comment: 49 page

Anyons and Chiral Solitons on a Line

    Get PDF
We show that excitations in a recently proposed gauge theory for anyons on a line in fact do not obey anomalous statistics. On the other hand, the theory supports novel chiral solitons. Also we construct a field-theoretic description of lineal anyons, but gauge fields play no role.Comment: 8 pages, revtex, no figure

Quantum cavitation in liquid 3^3He: dissipation effects

    Get PDF
We have investigated the effect that dissipation may have on the cavitation process in normal liquid 3^3He. Our results indicate that a rather small dissipation decreases sizeably the quantum-to-thermal crossover temperature T∗T^* for cavitation in normal liquid 3^3He. This is a possible explanation why recent experiments have not yet found clear evidence of quantum cavitation at temperatures below the T∗T^* predicted by calculations which neglect dissipation.Comment: To be published in Physical Review B6
